The Northwest Territories is made for road trips, big skies and the kind of stops you don't plan ahead. Follow the Mackenzie Highway north from Alberta, take in the waterfalls at Twin Falls Territorial Park, stop at the historic community of Fort Smith, or make your way to Hay River on the shores of Great Slave Lake. The roads can be long, but that's part of the fun! There's always another lookout, trail, lake or roadside story waiting around the bend.
Yellowknife is another must see, with its historic Old Town, Great Slave Lake waterfront and some of the best Northern Lights viewing in Canada. Head farther north and the Dempster Highway opens the door to a very different kind of adventure, crossing the Arctic Circle on its way toward the Yukon.
Then there are places like Wood Buffalo National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Canada, and the spectacular Nahanni National Park Reserve, where deep canyons, wild rivers and Virginia Falls showcase the sheer scale of the northern landscape.
But don't overlook the smaller stops. A local café, a roadside pullouts, a historic trading post or have a conversation with someone who calls this unique landscape their home. That can become one of the highlights of your trip!
